DeathSpank swatting 360, PS3 week of July 13
June 23, 2010 at 2:10 AM

EA flips the switch on Hothead Games and Ron Gilbert's new action role-playing game for Xbox 360, PS3 next month; $15 price point also confirmed.

Ron Gilbert and Hothead Games' DeathSpank has been finished for months, but only today received a release date. Electronic Arts today announced that it will publish the downloadable action role-playing game for the PlayStation 3 on July 13, with the Xbox 360 edition hitting the following day. Once launched, DeathSpank will sell for $15 (1,200 Microsoft points).

Though initially announced as an episodic game a la Hothead's Penny Arcade Adventures, DeathSpank evolved into a full downloadable game for Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. Along with its adventure-game-style storyline and puzzles, the title features a strong action RPG element, where gamers cut their way through swaths of enemies to gain items and level up. There's also a local cooperative mode, in which one player controls DeathSpank and the other takes care of his sidekick, Sparkles the Wizard.

DeathSpank is the first Ron Gilbert project since the Secret of Monkey Island creator became Hothead Studios' creative director early in 2008. However, it's also his last with the studio. He announced his departure when the game's development wrapped in April. Prior to his stint as creative director, Gilbert was brought in to Hothead as a collaborator on Penny Arcade Adventures.

Shippin' Out June 20-26: Need for Speed World, Transformers: War for Cybertron
June 23, 2010 at 1:17 AM

Electronic Arts' free-to-play online racer and Activision's latest robot action game joined by third episode of Telltale's latest Sam & Max season, massive MAG update.

With E3 2010 wrapped up and the longest day of the year already over, summer is here. The season is a time for outdoor activities; but here's a few reasons to stay inside.

One of the week's most prominent new releases is Activision and High Moon Studio's Transformers: War for Cybertron. The third-person-shooter, which takes place on the Transformer home planet of Cybertron, is a prequel to the animated series, and features both single player and multiplayer in adversarial and cooperative form. War for Cybertron comes to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC this week. A Wii installment, titled Transformers: Cybertron Advertures, and a DS duo of War for Cybertron Autobots/Decepticon hit stores this week as well.

Also hitting retail this week is Need for Speed World. Developed by EA Black Box, this free-to-play online racer features the open and expansive worlds of past NFS games, and incorporates friends, police chases, and more into the racing experience. The free-to-play client became available June 20, at which point a paid NFS Starter Pack was also made available on EA's digital shelves. The premium pack ups the level cap, adds additional items, an exclusive vehicle, and in-game currency.

Coming to the PS3 this week is the first substantial downloadable content for Zipper Interactive's Massive Action Game. The $10 Interdiction add-on brings a new gametype, three new maps, a new armor set, and more.

On the point-and-click adventure side of things, Telltale Games releases the third installment in the Sam & Max series this week on PS3, PC, and Mac. The newest episode of The Devil's Playhouse season, titled They Stole Max's Brain!, continues the zany saga of the very unlikely Dog and Rabbit duo.

On the Xbox Live Arcade, chauvinistic protagonist Duke Nukem returns this week in sidescrolling form. First arriving on PC in 2002, Duke Nukem Manhattan Project hits XBLA Wednesday, and comes with avatar awards.

Additional new releases this week include Mean Girls and Dragon Ball: Origins 2 for DS, and Field And Stream Total Outdoorsman Challenge for Xbox 360.
