PlayStation 3 update 3.40 now available, releases PlayStation Plus
June 30, 2010 at 12:12 AM

The premium PlayStation Network service is now available.

The latest system update for the PlayStation 3 has hit the PlayStation Network and with it so has it's new premium subscription service. Sony has finally released PlayStation Plus with system software update 3.40.

The PlayStation Plus feature will not take anything away from players who decide to keep their free PlayStation Network services. However, PlayStation Plus will give players willing to pay exclusive themes, gamer pictures, demos, and more.

Also arriving with the new system update is a new network based photo sharing feature for the console's photo gallery, a new video editor and uploader feature, five star rating support, and new power save settings. The video editor and uploader will enable users to edit, save, and upload videos on their PS3 to sites like Facebook and YouTube.

In addition to the 3.40 update, a new PlayStation Network application has been released on Facebook. The new app will expand upon the previous version that allowed Trophies and PSN purchases to be shown via the site's news feed.

"The application allows you to display your PlayStation Network profile on your Facebook account, find out which of your Facebook friends have a PSN account and send them a PlayStation Network friend request, view your PSN friends' online status and add the PlayStation Network application tab to your Facebook user profile," posted VP of network operations Americas Eric Lempel.

Kotaku sat down and played the Medal of Honor multiplayer beta recently and published their impressions.  Check out this quote:

This is no arcade game. In the multiplayer, at least, DICE has definitely tuned the experience for realism and grit over fast-paced, belt-notching kills and multiplayer variables that break the third wall.

Medal of Honor Beta Update
June 24, 2010 at 1:33 AM

A Medal of Honor beta update from the multiplayer producer, Patrick Liu.

Hi!

The development teams at DICE and EA would like to thank all of you participating in the PlayStation 3 and PC beta! The beta is now live on both the PlayStation 3 and PC, and available to anyone who owns a beta redemption key. You can redeem your key at www.medalofhonor.com/beta.

We are gathering a lot of constructive, informative, and crucial feedback from you that will be influential in the development of the game as we move forward.

As the beta progresses, we'll be addressing critical issues based on the information you provide. Our first patch planned for the PlayStation 3 will be going live in the next several days, and address a number of stability issues, including but not limited to:

• Various in-game crashes (including fixing bugs around scoreboard access, and support actions received while using AK47 & AKs74u)
• Improving performance, with greatest gains in crowded environments
• Improving matchmaking configurations
• Improving join-friend functionality

We have a PC patch in the works as well, and will have more details on that in the near future. In the meantime, please know that we are aware of the existing crash issues and have heard your concerns with the front-end - and while a more PC friendly menu, toned down HUD, weapon recoil tweaks, and balancing fixes are all on the way, some of our planned responses to your feedback may not be implemented until the final release version of the game.

Please continue to give us your feedback via the official Medal of Honor forums, and follow us on Twitter (or visit us on Facebook) for up to the minute news.

Work on the Xbox 360 beta is also progressing; we will continue to update all of you on this and hope to have a release date soon. Again, thank you for your continued patience!

- Patrick Liu, Producer

Get the details on new heroic career paths in the next expansion for The Sims 3.

The Sims 3 improved on just about everything that the series has to offer when it comes to controlling the lives, the hopes, and the dreams of little computer people. The next expansion, Ambitions, will focus on in-depth career paths that you can play through right along with your sims. Along with the creative career paths we covered in our previous interview, the expansion will offer three new "heroic" professions--firefighter, private investigator, and an expanded version of the doctor from The Sims 3. Associate producer Grant Rodiek explains.

GS: Give us an update on the game's development. What part of the game is the team working on now?

GR: At this point in development, we're focused on polishing all the loose ends. Do careers feel exciting at the right times? Are the rewards fantastic? Can players do everything we want them to be able to do? It's really satisfying to finally see all the pieces lock into place. We're so close!

GS: We understand that in addition to the creative career tracks we covered previously, Ambitions will offer additional "heroic" career paths, such as medicine, firefighting, and private investigation. Give us an overview of these careers. Why were these particular paths chosen?

GR: Fire has been one of the most consistent menaces dating back to even the original The Sims. We wanted to take something that's been so ordinary for so long and make it epic, a little challenging, and really chaotic. Firefighting was one of the first careers we designed. We had a lot of fun crafting more story-driven adventures in The Sims 3: World Adventures, so we wanted to take it a step further. Private investigation seemed like a natural fit for our "Sims noir" style, and our open world was perfect for Sim-styled mayhem.

We love doctors (such great fiction to be had!), and we were pretty happy with the ones from The Sims 3. We saw this as a great foundation for The Sims 3: Ambitions.

GS: How does the medical career go beyond the options in the original game?

GR: Doctors in Ambitions can exit the hospital to save lives during emergencies (such as a woman choking at the bistro), provide free health clinics and inoculations in the community, or provide experimental medicines to the community. Not everything is entirely ethical, but who are we to tell players that?

GS: Tell us about the challenges that firefighters in The Sims 3 will face. Are there new disasters from which they must rescue their neighbors?

GR: Of course! Firefighter sims will encounter small fires (that often escalate if you aren't careful), huge infernos that require dramatic rescues and smooth hose operation, or even earthquakes. Firefighters face two challenges--preparing for emergencies by training and maintaining equipment, and handling them when they occur with speed. Players are required to make quick decisions (do they save the sim or smash the chair before the fire spreads?) to earn high scores and save lives.

GS: What exactly goes into being a private investigator? Going through other people's mail and trash? Taking incriminating photos?

GR: You're going in the right direction! There's the less-honorable side of things, such as going through a suspect's mail or trash. However, private investigators can also conduct stakeouts, assist the police, snoop for clues with their trusty magnifying glass, or dust for prints. There's also blackmail, bribery, fisticuffs, and a handy lockpicking kit for other case-related issues.

GS: What are some of the new traits that help support these new professions?

GR: The best private investigators have the "perceptive" trait. They see things others might miss and generally rise more quickly through the ranks.

Favorites from The Sims 3, like "athletic," "brave," and "daredevil," are perfect for firefighters!

GS: Tell us about the new lifetime rewards that can be earned for players who choose these career paths.

GR: We have a new lifetime wish for players who want their firefighter sims to truly be the best. These sims need to save a large number of sims from death in a fire, which means a lot of emergencies and smart decisions.

We also have a lifetime wish for private investigators who solve a lot of cases. This won’t be easy--there are lots of sims in the neighborhood with many cases to solve!

Once you fulfill these wishes (as well as the smaller wishes we have to support these features), you can purchase new lifetime rewards. One of these is to permanently fireproof your home so you never need to worry about fire again. Another is a cash booster so that you earn money for every job included. This means you can really rake in the dough as a private investigator.

GS: Finally, is there anything else you'd like to add about these careers, or about Ambitions in general?

GR: We're really delighted that careers like firefighter, private investigator, and doctor provide such unique gameplay moments compared to the creative ones. I love snooping through the neighborhood as a private investigator to spy on people, break into homes, and occasionally solve cases. It's such a different Sims experience.

GS: Thanks, Grant.

While playing Sims games of your's,

Sin & Punishment: Star Successor Final Complete review

Sin & Punishment: Star Successor is an arcade style rail shooter that allows for a range of movement around the immediate level as the player is funneled along their path.

Players can assume the role of either the male or female character, Isa and Kachi. Each can fight on the ground or in the sky with the right equipment, and utilize a diverse mix of evasive maneuvers, melee attacks in close quarters and unique special attacks. The world of Sin & Punishment: Star Successor is packed with enemies ranging from swarms of low to mid-level enemies to over-the-top bosses.

In battling all these, players must use their particular mix of offensive and defensive skills to continually build point multiplier bonuses as they cash in on the enemies that they conquer. The game supports a variety of controller/controller configurations, two-player play and an online international leaderboard.

This satisfying and energetic on-rails shooter impresses with its relentless variety.

  • Striking, imaginative design
  • Satisfying and varied action
  • Always challenging, never cheap
  • Frequent, standout boss fights.

For those who enjoyed the N64's Sin and Punishment, either on import or later via Virtual Console download, this glorious Wii follow-up, also an on-rails shooter, is a no-brainer. Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Skies (known as Sin and Punishment: Star Successor in North America) improves on its predecessor in every respect. For everyone else, this game's nonstop creativity will be a treat, too.

Sin And Punishment: Star Successor Special Features

  • Players can take to the skies with a jetpack or hovering skateboard-like device to dodge enemy attacks or get a better lock on their targets. Get an extra bonus for staying grounded while avoiding injury. Various stages require understanding intricate patterns as players' characters side-scroll, race on vehicles or zip in every direction through a devastated post apocalyptic world. Players can fire at targets in the distance or for close-range targets use sword attacks.
  • The precision pointing abilities of the Wii Remote controller make targeting enemies a snap. Players have the option of controlling their characters using the Wii Remote-Nunchuk combination, the Classic Controller, the Classic Controller Pro, Nintendo Gamecube controller or the Wii Zapper.
  • Choose from two playable characters with unique combat abilities.
  • It's all about the score multiplier. The better a player's skills, the more multiplier points are earned, and the higher the overall score. Players will want to play the game again and again to beat their personal best on each level.
  • Created by Treasure, the developers behind Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun and Gunstar Heroes, the game pushes the boundaries of the shooter genre with horders of enemies, massive bosses and explosive graphics.
  • Endless waves of enemies got you down? A second player can join the fight to dish out twice the punishment.
  • An online international leaderboard lets players see how their scores stack up against players from other countries. Players will play again and again, and try to unlock even more points by figuring out and performing coin and medal-achieving tricks, in order to get an international-caliber score.
  •

Successor of the Skies is set years after the first game and follows two kids called Isa and Kachi as they do battle with military types, mechs, and outlandish animals. It all takes place in, around, and far above a future Japan. Isa is the son of the original game's main characters. Kachi appears to be, but isn't, a young girl. The plot, such as it is, may seem like nonsense, and there's not much more to it than laid out here. But that's no complaint. This is a game about spectacle and action, not story, and it manages both very well.

You play from a third-person perspective, pointing and shooting with the Wii Remote and using the nunchuk to dodge around the screen while you're scrolled through the game's seven stages. The Classic Controller and GameCube Controller are also supported, but the motion-control shooting works so well these are hardly called for. Kachi and Isa each have a melee attack for hitting enemies who get up close and a charged shot for doing massive, explosive damage. Unlike in the original game, you can fly--using a jetpack if you've picked Isa or a hoverboard if you're playing as Kachi. This gives Kachi or Isa full roam of the screen where you traverse with the analog stick and perform a quick dodge manoeuvre via the Z button.

    Get & Play !  Before Your Friend's : Pre-Order at CDuniverse.com

The game's abundance of ideas and variety of action is admirable. Sometimes the camera will swing to one side, turning it into a side-scrolling or vertically scrolling shooter. At another point, the game briefly becomes a side-on brawler, giving a twist to the finale of one boss fight. The quality and variety of visual design is likewise dazzling, to the point where the sometimes less-than-pretty textures are eclipsed. The on-rails experience takes in sky fortresses, space stations, lava submarines, haunted forests, and underwater tunnels. These are variously populated with soldiers, elaborate robots, chimera-like beasts, bioluminescent fish, and screen-filling bosses. You encounter bosses and minibosses frequently and, like the environments and ordinary enemies, they are hugely, gratifyingly inventive. A voodoo-styled boss with a bird skull on her head fires exploding lotuses and time-bending ravens at you. Another boss transforms into a colossal manta ray and then into a school of flipping, laser-equipped dolphins. Each boss is uniquely memorable and, happily, tough enough to make each encounter feel epic.

As is traditional, the boss battles are multistage affairs in which you chip away at a vast health bar that passes through all the colours of the rainbow on its way down to zero. In the absence of checkpoints during these battles (elsewhere, checkpoints are generously doled out), the game is at its most brutally challenging but it never quite strays into frustrating difficulty. That said, the ability to switch between difficulty modes on the fly would still be welcome. As it is, the only way to switch among easy, normal, and hard is to start again or to have already unlocked that stage at that difficulty on a previous play-through. An experienced player on a high-score (that is, no-death) run might manage one of these in just three or four hours, but the average player should expect up to six hours for a single play-through. Though it's not an especially long game (it doesn't need to be), its replay value is high, with online leaderboards for players to compete on and personal records to beat.

Scoring is based on a multiplier system that rewards stringing together kills without getting hit, so dodging is crucial. There's often a single, small safe patch on the screen, with the rest filled with lasers, fire, floating mines, boulders, missiles, and other glowing, exploding, or destructive items. This leaves you navigating a hazard-filled screen with one hand and shooting with the other. Doing both at once, with one eye on a distant enemy's movement and another on the shifting pattern of deadly things in the foreground, is key, and there's a great deal of satisfaction to be had in mastering it.

Take aim and blast your way through a post-apocalyptic world packed with nonstop arcade shooter action. The two-player mode is a letdown. Rather than putting a second character on the (admittedly crowded) screen, the mode adds a second targeting reticle. The second player becomes not much more than an assistant; he or she may be good for a little extra damage, picking up some extra points, and clearing the screen of hazards but has no special attacks. With nothing to do but paint targets with the Wii Remote, the second player's experience is diluted beyond recognition. The weak co-op offering aside, Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Skies impresses with its gratifying action and wealth of ideas. Wii owners owe it to themselves to experience a high-energy on-rails shooter with this diverse and fresh-feeling game.
